A pesticide container recycling program is coming to North Dakota. The Ostlund Chemical Company along with some help from the North Dakota Department of Agriculture is initiating a recycling program for the recycling of plastic containers. Ostlund recently purchased a plastic granulator to help in their share of being environmentally conscious. This coming summer they plan to travel to about 25 locations throughout the state picking up containers to granulate, pelletize and ship off to be recycled into new containers.

To participate in the program, the containers must be properly rinsed; by either triple or power rinsing; with no chemical residues remaining on the containers. The caps and labels should be removed, and must also be made of a recyclable plastic; codes one and two, which most are.

More information on the program will b available as the program progresses, for now, keep looking in local newspapers, newsletters, magazines, and other agricultural publications for this information.

Remember, recycling benefits everyone if you have containers or know someone who does, the North Dakota Department of Agriculture and Ostlund Chemical Company encourages you to participate. Help in the conservation of America, recycle; it is the environmentally sound thing to do.

For more information please feel free to contact Paula Lentz, at the North Dakota Department of Agriculture; 701-224-2980.

INFORMATION ON CHEMICAL CONTAINER DISPOSAL

SAVE TIME AND MONEY

Proper rinsing of empty chemical containers at the time of use is an economical and efficient use of chemicals. By adding the rinsate into the sprayer tank, all the chemical purchased can be used. Rinsing itself takes a few moments. It saves time and expense by preventing problems with unrinsed containers and rinsate storage.

RINSING IS EFFICIENT

For nearly all emptied chemical containers, proper rinsing at the time of use will remove more than 99% of any remaining chemical. If containers are not properly rinsed at the time of use, such containers may be difficult to rinse to the satisfaction of the landfills.

HOW TO PROPERLY RINSE

"Triple Rinse" means the flushing of containers three times, each time using a volume of the normal diluent equal to approximately ten percent of the container's capacity and adding the rinse liquid to the spray mixture.

"Power Rinse" means placing the container upside-down over the sprayer or mixing tank, with a pressure spray of water directed up through the opening of the upside-down container or by inserting a sharp probe with the pressure water through the side or bottom of the container.

To remove the rinsate from a flat top container (5's, 30's and 55's), punch a hole next to the edge, hold the container upside-down over the sprayer until all liquid has drained. Look inside and be sure the container is clean before storing. For storage, leave the cover off, punch holes in the bottom and store on its side so the container can air out and not collect rainwater.

See reverse side for proper rinsing verification which your landfill may require.
